Tesco in Wallasey Village?

Tesco logoOver the last few months there have been rumours that the land where ‘Classic Cars of Wirral’ use to be situated in Wallasey Village (next to the Farmer’s Pub), was to be taken over by a well-known multi national store.

I can confirm that at the end of November, the Council received a planning application for the construction of a new convenience Tesco retail store with access and car parking and ‘associated works’.

If you would like to comment on Tesco’s application, you can contact the planning officer by writing to Sarah Lacey at Wallasey Town Hall, North Annexe, Brighton Street, Wallasey, CH44 8ED or email: sarahlacey@wirral.gov.uk or telephone Sarah on 0151 691 8300 quoting planning application APP/12/1410 – you have until early January 2013.

So far, I’ve yet to meet anyone who wants Tesco to move into this location.  Nisa Local has started a petition against this applicaton and already have over 200 signatures.

  1. Leah….I do worry about the impact on Nisa, but a Tesco store would be very convenient, and doubtless carry a bigger range than anything else in the village, so on balance it would be good…especially for the elderly. I see your “online poll” shows nearly 50% of people support the opening. Happy New Year…Mark

  2. Leah. I was passing through Wallasey village yesterday and a little boy had been knocked over by a car outside Farmers pub. The road was busy and if tesco were to come what impact will this have on St Mary’s College pupils where there are around 1500 children that attend that school. Tesco have proposed for FOUR DELIVERIES A DAY which can be expected anytime of the day, how can this possibly be safe for the conflict with vulnerable schoolchildren movements crossing the street to get to the new store coupled with increased vehicular traffic. We have 24 hour costcutter, co-op, nisa, premier already in Wallasey village, why add more problems? Also I looked at the D&A statement online, the proposal to CONE OFF the parking spaces to take deliveries is highly questionable with significant flaws. I would also like to add, the swept path analysis plans attached are deficient because they do NOT feature the largest delivery vehicle that might be expected to operate at the site. The scheme only features 10 spaces and it would appear to be significantly deficient in this respect. It appears that overspill parking in this area would be quite detrimental to the free flow of traffic along Wallasey village and road safety and I note there are parking restrictions left right and centre.
From looking at the list of statutory consultees on the planning application, it does not appear that the highway section of Wirral borough council have been asked to examine the scheme as I would of expected.
I shop at Nisa once a week and the gentleman who works there drops my shopping off. I will be in full support of all local businesses that will be affected. Tesco have ruined already a number of businesses I know of in Moreton area. Wirral council see it as a extra income for them for business rates and somehow they think it will help the area but believe me it won’t. Can you imagine a derelict Nisa, Flower shop, card shop, baker shop….this I can guarantee, they will go within a year and will be replaced with more hairdressers and takeaways in the area.
I have also done extra research openly to the public that the owner, I will not mention, has not yet sold the land yet until Tesco have the thumbs up from the council.
Wallasey village does not need extra traffic, pupils getting knocked over and maybe killed by road traffic accident due to someone driving to tesco for a loaf of bread.
Wallasey village needs a carpark, I request the owner do the right thing and withdraw the application and propose an application for a ‘private pay and display’ carpark which will be more beneficial for the whole of Wallasey village and especially the Farmers arms pub which do not have a carpark. A scheme of this size could have up to around 25 parking spaces. If the right guidelines are used this would be a great earner for the owner and a great help to the local community without just thinking about their pockets.
I see online that the committee meeting date is 24/01/2013. I hoping this application will be WITHDRAWN.

  3. Tesco will turn the area into ghost town all shop around will close and be board up,as a business person myself i know opening 1 tesco = 5 small business closed it a fact check on line tesco is to big for little wirral council to stop them but I ve made my point

  4. Hey leah, this is just inviting danger to the village, 2 children were knocked down on friday night by st marys at rush hour an taken to alder hey and that’s with out the traffic an congestion caused by tesco customers, ridiculous the village has pleanty of family run business’ which serve the village everything they need! Parking Is a major issue in the village and has been for a while now, parking restrictions are throughout the wholw of the village, tesco plan shows 10 spaces 2 being disabled were are staff going to park? And during delivery times the car park has to be empty, this has not been thought threw and I would like Mark to explain how tescos is convenient and what it brings that the village lacks? As we have 4 shops, a butchers florist etc thank you.

  5. Hello everyone, many thanks for your comments which are always appreciated. Just let me confirm though that this application is NOT going to the Council’s planning committee on 24 January – there are usually planning meetings once a fortnight, the Tesco application is not listed as the report has not yet been completed or published.

There have been two incidents where children have been knocked down by traffic and taken to hospital in the last week and I have made the council aware of what’s happened, luckily the children involved have made a complete recovery. The Highways department are looking at the site and all/any implications on road safety and parking – their comments and/or concerns will be in the final report written by the planning officer.

I have asked the council to carry out a full review of the parking restrictions in Wallasey Village (this was before Tesco’s application) which I hope will go ahead in the next couple of weeks. Many of the double yellow lines are historical and not necessarily right for now and the current situation in Wallasey Village. According to Tesco’s application there will be ten parking spaces two of those will be for disabled drivers. I don’t believe either that their suggestion that to ‘cone off’ the parking area to make room for delivery vans will work – infact, in such a small area it’s laughable.

I have objected to this application by Tesco and all comments, emails and the petition, signed by over 1,000 local people will all be taken into account in the final report and recommendation.

As soon as there is further news, I will update my blog and let everyone know exactly what is going on, I will also published the date and time of the planning meeting as soon as it is known.
    Kind regards.
    Leah

  6. As a local resident I too object strongly to the application made by Tesco …The road running through Wallasey Village is already heavily used and I have grave concerns especially to the over-spill and parking issues to local residents, the amount of increased traffic will cause an increase in noise levels and the potential danger to local school children/local residents with the increase of traffic, We where informed last August that Tesco where to build on this site but when I contacted WBC planning dept in Oct they informed me this was all a rumour !!I
I feel they should have used the phrase C’est la vie, seems more appropriate due to the amount of applications passed by the committee, This application should never be passed, Tesco is a multi-billion pound Co’ I am sure if their application is denied would not be a huge blow to this company but it would be a huge blow to local trades people, residents.and environment

  7. Obviously some very valid points have been made about the negative aspects of the proposed Tescos. I am the Mother of a local paper boy who is happily up and delivering papers at 6.30 in the morning. He delivers to local homes for the elderly as well as people who are less able to go and get their paper. A nice tradition that will also have to end if Tescos arrives in the village. All these things matter within our community.
    Sally.
