Heartbeat
While I was at the Station I took the opportunity of having a look at the new ‘Heatbeat’ gym.
It’s now based in an old, disused building at the back, which has been completely renovated. The gym is sponsored by the Primary Care Trust, for those who are recovering from heart problems or after major heart surgery.
It’s a fantastic facility with fully equipped gym, shower and toilet and a large kitchen area. There were a few ‘regulars’ there when I called in and they all thought the new ‘Heartbeat’ gym was great. I had a go on the exercise bike, very difficult when you’re talking at the same time! Fire officers also have their own ‘multi-gym’ equipment which they bought themselves.
I also spoke to Gordon, who is in charge of the Blue Watch. He showed me the latest piece of breathing equipment (could have done with that on the exercise bike!). We also had a chat about the latest health and safety instructions given to fire fighters during the hot weather – they’ve been told to drink more water in the heat and to keep in the shade to avoid getting too hot! sensible advice in any other walk of life, but not when you’re fighting a fire!
