Full Council

The current situation facing Ss Peter and Paul’s Church, New Brighton, was debated at last nights Full Council meeting of all local ward Councillors.

So far over 3,000 Wirral residents have signed a petition to support the campaign to ‘Save Our Unique Landmark’, (SOUL – which is a non-Party political group) and Wirral Council were asked not to support any option which would result in Ss Peter and Paul’s Church being demolished or left to deteriorate into a dilapidated state.

To date the Diocese hasn’t given a reason for wanting to close the Church and with over 400 people a week worshiping there it’s hard to understand why they would want to close.  In the absence of any reason, there’s speculation that this historic building could be flattened for housing.

The debate produced all party support and I hope that the Trustees of Diocese of Shrewsbury will now start talking to campaigners.
